Pre-Views #01 Marvel's Cloak & Dagger....

Way back in the mid-'80's I remember running across a comic about two runaway kids who got strung out on an experimental drug some nasty big pharma corporation put out on the street.

The pair through an accident and the effects of the drug became permanently linked due to a mutation they both possessed. One a wealthy white girl running away from her abusive father, the other a working-class black boy fleeing drug dealers looking to kill him for something someone else did. Her 'power' made her a 'child of light', while his caused a descent into darkness. Together the pair were 'Cloak & Dagger'.

Now more than 30 years later, it would seem Disney-ABC's basic cable channel put in an order for a 'YA' version of the old comic duo to air in 2018. I kept up with the comic for a few years, but it got far too 'soap operary' for my tastes. The pair's powersets were initially at the low-end of the middle-scale of super-heroes (think above 'Punisher' and 'Daredevil', but below 'Spiderman' or 'Luke Cage'.)

Via the accident, 'Tyrone' (aka: 'Cloak') gains the 'power of darkness' as his body becomes a living portal to a 'dark dimension'. He gets a boost in strength, can darken a limited area but his greatest power is the ability to teleport great distances via the portal. 'Tandy' (aka: Dagger) gains the power of light as her body becomes a conduit in which light may enter the world. She too gains a boost in strength and agility (via her background as a ballerina.) She can bring forth light in a limited area, perform limited healing but her greatest ability is the creation of light constructs called 'daggers' which strike the very soul of anyone hit by them.

The nature of their powers creates a parasitic/symbiotic relationship as the pair rely on one another to keep the other's power in check. Cloak hungers for light energy and can take it from living beings (but does not want to.) Dagger must shed excess light energy lest it bring harm to those around her. Together, the pair create a 'Yin and Yang' duality that allows them to function as a single unit.

But of course, being teens there must be all the 'angst', longings and other (blech) trappings that make YA stories popular. Not my thing at all, but I am interested in seeing what will be made of this series with these unique characters. There is sooooo much that could go wrong if they have poor, myopic (okay I'll just say it, 'shitty') writers onboard. Hopefully, the team handling 'Cloak & Dagger' will take the lessons learned from 'Iron Fist' and not do that!

Look for 'Marvel's Cloak & Dagger' on Freeform in 2018
